The Experts at Meguiar's Stresses the Importance of Choosing Wisely For Proper Wheel Care

Sep 21, 2011

For any car lover, a detail job is not complete without a clean set of wheels, but with so many different types of wheel care products, how do you know which one to use? Contrary to popular belief, different types of wheels require specific cleaning solutions which is why Meguiar’s®, the car care experts since 1901, have put together a simple wheel product guide to help owners make the right choice. Not only will using the right product give you the brilliant shine you’re looking for, but it will help maintain the value and longevity of your wheels!

Know That There is a Variety: The first step in wheel care is recognizing that not all wheels are made the same. While many wheels look similar, they can be made from different types of materials and coatings. The product you use on your wheels is determined by the surface which can range anywhere from chrome, powder coated, painted, to polished aluminum and many more.

· Identify What You are Driving On: The next step is to determine what kind of wheels you own. Most wheels that come with a factory purchased vehicle are coated wheels. However if you have replaced them with aftermarket wheels, you can find out the surface material by contacting the manufacturer. Some wheels may even be coated with two of three different types of coatings, depending on how customized they are.

· Choose the Right Product: When using a wheel cleaner to remove brake dust and grime there are three products Meguiar’s experts recommend:

For all factory coated wheels, Meguiar’s experts recommend Meguiar’s® Hot Rims All Wheel Cleaner. Meguiar’s® Hot Rims Chrome Wheel Cleaner is specifically designed for all chrome plated wheels, and is sure to give you a mirror-like finish.

. For uncoated or polished aluminum, anodized, and powder coated wheels, the professionals recommend Meguiar’s® Hot Rims Aluminum Wheel Cleaner. This is the safest Meguiar’s wheel cleaner and is also recommended if you’re unable to find out your wheel type. This is also the best product to choose if you have any type of aftermarket or high performance brakes since they are typically made of specialized components as well.

· Know the Consequences: Using the wrong product with the wrong surface can potentially cause permanent damage to the surface of your wheels, brake or even suspension components. Make sure to read the label on any product you use and check that it is meant to work with your wheels’ surface.
