Danny Trejo and Mister Cartoon Lowriding in the Streets of LA

Mar 19, 2014

YES!!!! Just the type of video I've been wanting to see. Although this video is four years old, it still gives a teaser behind the Lowriding Culture. I have a weird facination with lowriders, simply because it's virtually impossible to throw one together. It takes an incredible amount of time to customize one and they also have a great amount of detail to them.

Everything about this collage says LA, so I definitely know that Estevan Oriol shot it.
The world famous tattoo artist, Mister Cartoon teamed up with Danny Trejo, a world renown actor. The two have a great deal in common- aside from being from Los Angeles and having distinctive tattoos, they have a deep love for lowriders. Shot by Estevan Oriol, Danny Trejo Lowriding with Mister Cartoon is a great lifestyle video to give you a taste behind the art of Lowriding. And if you already saw it... watch it again.

P.S. I really want to drive one. Of course I want to ride in a lowrider, but driving one and operating the hydraulics at the same time would be interesting. And I mean a real lowrider, one from the late 50s- early 60s.

Sanctiond Stories talks cars with Curren$y

Jul 22, 2013

Photo from Rides Magazine.com

My favorite company that makes car care products (Sanctiond) is back with their Sanctiond Stories. I honestly enjoy their Sanctiond Stories segments because they sit down and talk to people about cars and most importantly, they're always shot by Estevan Oriol.

Their latest story involves a New Orleans rapper named Curren$y. If you keep up with Curren$y, you would already know that he has a deep love for a particular car- the Chevy Corvette. Not only that, he owns a shop with his manager, Mousa called Street Customs Motors in his hometown. Estevan has a informative conversation with the two of them about something that the three of them share a love for--- cars. Check out the interview below...

I wished the video was longer.

Estevan Oriol does Gumball 3000 Rally

Jul 23, 2012

Frequent collaborator to Mister Cartoon, and respected photographer, Estevan Oriol had the pleasure of partaking in this years' Gumball Rally (so jealous). As any artistic talent would, he documented his weeklong journey. From New York to Los Angeles, he captured it all... well most of it. Check it out to figure out why he couldn't make it to one of the stops...

I wasn't kidding when I said that I was jealous. But I also know that my time will come. Patience is a very hard quality to possess.

Bernie's Favorite: Estevan Oriol talks cars with Travis Barker

Jul 7, 2012

Photo found on Sanctiond Official Website
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that I love hip-hop. I was always around it because my mom listens to it as well. I seriously bought my mom the Life After Death album for her birthday one year (nothing says happy birthday like a Notorious B.I.G. album). It's hard to step outside of my world with music, but finding a common ground does help, and I'm open to finding a common ground.

found on Grassroots Motor Sports.com

Case in point- Travis Barker. I know he's a drummer in Blink 182, and I know he loves cars. Sanctiond Automotive sat down with Travis Barker, ironically when Mister Cartoon just completed one of his tattoos. But with what he had to say about cars, you have to respect him for it.

Top four things I loved about this interview...

1. When he said "Paint jobs are a reflection of the personality of the owner"
2. A girl he was dating said she hated old school cars, and after she said that, it put a strain on the relationship.
3. How his son is knowledgeable about Chevys before the age of 10.

And the most important point, and it is the reason why I love to travel to different shows when he stated how people in different parts of the country customize their cars.

Great interview Estevan Oriol. Great Interview. I have a new found respect for Travis Barker because of it.

Bernie's Recommendation: Cruisin' Califas at the Oceanside Museum of Art

May 15, 2012

So while pulling my weave out looking for something to post, I came across something interesting. Another side to me is that I do love going to museums, and quite often, museums do have exhibits dedicated to automobiles. Halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego, lies a city called Oceanside, and within that city is a gem called the Oceanside Museum of Art (or OMA). OMA realized how important Lowriding is to Los Angeles culture (side note: even I knew that, and I'm New York to the heart) and how LA is the Lowrider Capital of the World. This past weekend was the opening weekend to Cruisin' Califas: The Art of Lowriding, the exhibit that's dedicated to art of lowriders.

According to the Oceanside Museum of Art,
"The title of the exhibition, Cruisin’ Califas, refers to Lowrider culture in California and the favorite pastime of the Lowrider – cruising! Califas is a slang term that refers to California amongst the Latino culture with roots that going back to the mythological land of Calafia that inspired the naming of California. Largely associated with the rise of the automobile industry and the post WWII manufacturing boom, Lowriders became a popular way for people, mostly without the means to purchase a brand new car, to express their individuality and cultural pride. Lowrider describes a car that is customized with a hydraulic setup to be low to the ground, with an elaborate paint job that often includes pin striping and lettering, with striking chrome features, and uniquely designed upholstery. Classic cars such as Chevrolet Impalas and Master Deluxes are often associated with this culture, but today, any type of vehicle can be transformed into a Lowrider, from motorcycles to bicycles, SUV’s and tricycles. Reaching farther then cars; this phenomenon has become a way of life for many people, influencing the style of the artists involved in this exhibition."

And you know that artwork of Estevan Oriol and Jae Bueno will be a part of the collection... Thank God. I said Thank God, because to have a collection about Lowriders and not feature the work of Oriol- whose body of work is greatly influenced by Los Angeles culture and Bueno- the one person whose work you can count on seeing in Lowrider Magazine and who shoots Car Shows in the Southwestern Part of the US. I honestly think Jae Bueno has photographed every lowrider that is in the Southwest. And you have to respect the both of them, and I tip my NY Yankees hat to them.

This exhibit will be at the museum from May 13 - September 30, 2012, so hopefully, HOPEFULLY, I will make it to LA to see this. But if you live in LA or San Diego and love lowriders-- or cars in general, haul ass down the 5, and get there. Because you may know a lot about Lowriders, but I'm sure you can learn something at this exhibit.

The photo above is the prime example why I respect Lowriders so much. I did not personally know the owner of this vehicle, but I understand that he's in a much better place and isn't suffering (Bernie doesn't deal with death well). I've said this plenty, plenty of times on this site. The main reason why I respect Lowriders simply because of the attention of detail that the owners put into their car. The engraving is serious. And since I do have a design background, I can and do appreciate that level of intricate detail. No matter how hard you try, you can't throw together a Lowrider- it takes serious thought.

I'm still getting a Lowrider Plaque that says Bernie and I want Estevan Oriol to photograph me with it. My mind works fast and while typing this, I just came up with the photo shoot.

P.S. My favorite museum of all time is the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and I do think that the High Museum of Art in Atlanta is not a real museum. The High Museum sucks.

Sanctiond Automotive talks with Platinum Motorsports

May 1, 2012

(You know the Keshishyan Brothers have the best photos of themselves on their site)

LA Native and Photography great Estevan Oriol shot an incredible video about "the Neiman Marcus of Car Customization Shops", Platinum Motorsports. He shot the Keshishyan brothers (George and Jack) and discussed how they acquired the business from their father and turned it into a powerhouse, their work ethic, and the work that comes out of the shop. Either way, it was a great look, even better than whatever articles that's been printed out about them.

Check out the video and see for yourself.

Even though they had a leg up in the business (meaning: the business was given to them by their father), you have to admit, they did turn it into something far greater than what the business originally was. Anytime you can do that, you have to give them respect.

P.S. You know Estevan Oriol does great work. He reminds me of Hype Williams- meaning the video he produces will have that same uber high quality like his photography. With Hype, his movie Belly looks just like his music videos.
