On March 27th and 28th, I returned home to cover the 2024 New York International Auto Show. Held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Midtown Manhattan, this is one of the shows that I hold near and dear to my heart because it's the closest auto show to my hometown, which is located on Long Island.
Although I love going to this show, unfortunately manufacturer attendance still hasn't returned to pre-pandemic capacity. Automotive manufacturers like Mercedes Benz, BMW, Mini, Dodge, Chrysler, Land Rover, and Jaguar opted against attending. However, that just meant that I was able to show more love to those who did come.
The continued major push this year was electric cars. Most manufacturers showed their electric models but still brought the models that everyone knows and loves. In case you missed the previous two years, another aspect of the electric cars at the Auto show was that (and this is going to sound super specific) the City of New York is making the switch to having electric vehicles. Which means... NYPD, NYFD, the Sanitation Department, Street Sweepers, ambulances, correctional officers, taxis, and buses have been making the switch to using electric vehicles.
Thankfully one of the sections that I was excited to see was Manhattan Motorcars' exotic/luxury area, and it felt like old times. This year, the Chelsea dealership brought the Rolls Royce Spectre (ultra luxurious electric coupe), Bentley Bentayga and Continental GTS (the Continental has always been a dream of mine, not so much the convertible), Lamborghini Urus and Revuelto, Lotus Eletre (which was adorable to see in person. It's an electric, hyper SUV- 909 horsepower, 0-62 mph in 2.95 seconds), and the Karma Kaveya and Gyesera.
I've figured out that Genesis usually has tricks under their sleeve and this year's concepts include the Neolun SUV- which is designed to rival the Mercedes Maybach SUV, GV60 Magma Concept, Genesis x Gran Berlinetta, and the GV80 Coupe.
The other half of the lower level was filled with customized cars. One surprise was that Staten Island's own, Never Ride Stock, had their exhibition open during the press days. My first time checking out the NRS Experience, I saw custom cars as well as custom clothing, sneakers and artwork. Usually the Experience takes place within the final three days of the auto show, so this was a treat.
The room next door held the electric car portion of the show, including the track as well as more custom cars. However, this is New York, so the majority of the cars were of the JDM genre and luxury/exotics. But to my surprise...
There were four lowriders. Like that's an all time high for the New York Auto Show because lowriders aren't as common as they are on the West Coast or even the South for that matter. It was harder to get clean shots of two of them, but the two that were on the end made up for it.
The show was the same size as last year's but still a little smaller than the pre-pandemic shows. I was so appreciative to return home to cover the 2024 New York Auto Show. To see the rest of the photos, check out Bernie's 2024 New York International Auto Show gallery.
